Дом и сад №49 4 In search of serenity. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 16 Centuries-old homes are imbued with a sense of the passing generations that have not only cared for them but also tended the land. It is an elusive spirit of place that lingers both in the house and the garden at Clinton Lodge where Lady Noel Collum lives in the small Sussex village of Fletching. «I’ve designed the garden to echo the house by dividing it into a number of compartments, each with a contrasting mood and reflecting different periods of garden history», explains Lady Collum. European size. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 26 Sometimes it seems impossible to create the European styled garden somewhere in the midlands of Russia due to its basic elements are evergreen deciduous and thermophilic plants. The reason for that, certainly, is severe Russian winters, late spring and early autumn frosts. Nevertheless the landscape designer Irina Kokuyeva is assured that there are many plants bringing the old European spirit into any garden situated near Moscow and diversifying seasonal paints. Local flavour . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 32 The features of that area with clearly seen relief drop and also the views overlooking a small river and a wood, defined that garden’s style. The interrelation between the garden and the environment became the project’s key element. The small river, the wood behind it, the panorama of the settlement – they all set the landscape motives giving individual features to that place. This used to be childhood dreams . . . . . . 36 The garden gone wild, the bench buried in verdure and flowers’ aromas, tasty apples and sugar pears …all that reminded to the garden’s owner of his childhood years. In 2007 Ilya Sanayev and Natalia Stenchikova, designers, started creation of a garden in the west of the Moscow region. That garden’s project was based on childhood dreams and memories. Would you like to be here?. . . . . . . . . . . . 38 From the beautiful, lush setting of an idyllic Jamaican hotel, Christian Aid invites you to step through the picture postcard and visit the other side of Jamaica. Designer Claire Whitehouse has created a garden that tells the story of HIV in the Caribbean and highlights the importance of education in the fight against the global pandemic. Away from the luxury of the allinclusive hotels, many Jamaicans live in poverty. Illiteracy and unemployment are growing problems, especially for young people. Garden in blue-and-grey . . . . . . . . . . . . . 42 Designer Alan Smith asks, «In this hectic modern world and after a long stressful day, what could be better than a relaxing glass of wine in a calm and peaceful garden?» Alan’s garden is designed to be a relaxing space with subtle planting of textured greens, simple white flowers and a lush green lawn. A relaxing trickle of water complements the space making it a calm place to unwind. Green hedges . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 44 Recently the popularity of green hedges rises higher in our country. It is one of the European gardens’ and parks’ most frequent components, and it is obvious. Dense rows of plants and bushes not only decorate any country site, but also carry out many useful functions. The experts of the «Paer +» company tell us how to create the green hedge for one day. Flowering season in Chelsea . . . . . . . . . . 48 Tens of blossoming gardens welcomed Chelsea’s visitors within five May days during annual RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Lots of brand new achievements in the field of gardening and also the most interesting and attractive design solutions and ideas were presented at the Show. Among an abundance of plants designers left a place also for garden inhabitants — insects, birds and fishes. The garden presented by the well-known master of landscape design — David Domoney — is decorated by the tank with piranhas – this is the way the author illustrates communication between the modern civilization and the wild nature. That booth was exhibited in the Big pavilion and was awarded with the Chelsea’s gold medal. Wiel Linssen’s coniferous paradise . . . . . 88 The Netherlands is the perfect country for garden tourism. The well-known botanical gardens with the richest collections, boundless plantations of nurseries and fields of blossoming tulips – all that is here. The separate sphere is private gardens and even tiny front gardens, especially if we talk about the Dutch flower admirer’s garden. Last spring such enthusiast welcomed our author, Evgeny Tarasov, gardener and traveler. The LIBO nursery owned by Wiel Linssen was recommended to him by the Dutch colleagues as «the best coniferous collection in the country». The response of the American gardener was even more intriguing. After his visit to that nursery he wrote the following: «I thought that I was dead and got to coniferous paradise at once». The Alpine cabbage . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 92 Ordinary cabbage is the main food plant of the countries of the moderate widths, and it gave the name to the whole large family of plants — Brassicaceae. There are many ornamental plants for garden decoration in this family together with ordinary prosaic cultures and even weeds. The most spectacular cabbages live in high mountains. Summer pleasure . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 110 What can be finer in a hot summer day, than snoozing in a hammock in a shadow of apple-trees? Slow and regular rocking promotes a relaxation. Today the ageold invention of sailors for dreaming at the ships has turned into a country life attribute. Magic melody . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 114 As known, two substances calm a man’s nervous system best of all — they are: a burning fire and a flowing water. The fireplace serves for looking at the fire, but it is inside the house. So a fountain can become a rest source in the garden outside the house. In this overview we will tell you about fountains as landscape design elements. № (49)’2009 4 Contents 42 26 48 124
