Дом и сад №54 4 Landscape with terraces . . . . . . . . . . . . 14 Our special correspondent Nicola Stocken Tomkins visited Wayford Manor’s garden. Reconstructed in the early 1900s by the great designer Harold Peto for his sister, it echoes the style of Peto’s own garden at Iford Manor. Today the Peto design’s entirety has got its special effect, whose true value could be clearly seen due to the Goffes, having moved to Wayford Manor in 1966. Russian manor’s romanticism . . . . . . . . 28 An amazing place, a classical architecture of the house, a spacious site of the simple form, featuring the sculptured relief and spectacular views — all that is the initial description of the land, located on the bank of the Klyazminsky water basin. Inga Obraztsova, landscape designer, met a need to merge classically styled architecture of the house and picturesque views of a natural landscape into a harmonious image of the Russian manor in style of the second half of the XIX-th century, but at the same time not to make its too traditional or eclectic. Waiting on a miracle. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 34 Thinking over the garden project, the landscape architect tried to find the concept which could be closer and more interesting to the garden owners. During one of their conversations there came an idea of a sea landscape from «Scarlet sails» — a beautiful novel by Alexander Grin. A bridge, a quay, a light tower — all that reminded a sea wind, leaving salty drops on your face, and a majestic noise of breaking waves. That kind of design was a perfect space for romantic and dreamy people. Seeking for beauty . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 38 The small site built up with massive constructions in the 1990s style, is a very difficult subject for creative realization. Especially if this site has an already completed layout. Having no possibility to use rout tracers, land zoners and vertical lay-out ways, it only remains to select and configure the plants’ range. Sculptural ornaments . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 40 Only a few people can decorate a garden with creations of the passed epochs, and very often products of modern masters can compete in cost with antiques. But if you still insist on the use of sculpture in your garden, in this case the main thing is a competent choice a place for it.
