BIRDS OF SOUTHERN DEVON . . . . . . . 18 Beauty enchants, and especially so at Hamblyn’s Coombe where the collaboration of a husband and wife — a passionate gardener and a renowned sculptor — has produced a magical garden. Gardening had long been a passion for the late Robert McCrum so, once he retired from the navy, he concentrated on carving a garden out of a wild, Devon hillside, working in tandem with his wife, Bridget McCrum, whose sculptures grace the landscape. ‘Bridget’s work is fundamental to the garden and, as we landscape new areas to suit each new sculpture, we design a gardened space around it, he explained shortly before his death in 2005.
